In Long Beach, CA, Rise Above Power Wash completed a patio soft wash and surface cleaning project for a homeowner whose patio was covered in years of dirt and algae. The work focused on safely inactivating the organic growth and removing the embedded soil without harming surrounding landscaping.
We began by preparing a 3% sodium hypochlorite mix combined with a 0.5% surfactant, applied using our Pro Mixer XL soft wash system. Before applying that solution, we neutralized the surrounding plants and bushes with water to prevent any contact or damage to the owner’s shrubs. Taking this step first is important whenever using an active solution near vegetation.
Once the chemical solution was applied, we allowed a ten minute dwell time. That pause gave the treatment time to render the organic growth inactive so the algae and biofilm would lift more easily from the surface. After dwell time was completed, we moved on to deep surface cleaning with our 18 inch Whisper Wash surface cleaner.
Because the organic growth was inactive, the dirt and algae lifted out with each pass of the surface cleaner. The 20 inch Whisper Wash helped cover larger areas consistently while minimizing splash and overspray, making the cleaning more efficient on the brick patio surface. We worked methodically across the patio to ensure even coverage and to avoid leaving streaks.
Following the surface cleaning, we performed a high pressure rinse using an 8 gallons per minute Honda GX90. The rinse down removed any remaining residue and made the patio look much cleaner. The rinse stage was completed in about ten minutes, which kept the job efficient while ensuring the surface was fully flushed.
After the rinse, we applied a post treatment to further ensure that all organic growth was inactive down to each pore of the brick, addressing the microbial level as described. The post treatment helps reduce the chance of rapid regrowth and improves the long-term appearance of the patio.
Throughout the project, our focus was on using the appropriate chemical mix, allowing correct dwell time, and combining soft wash and surface cleaning tools to remove years of dirt and algae.
