Awning & Fountain Restoration in California Heights Historic District in Long Beach, CA
This project took place at a home in the California Heights Historic District, Long Beach’s largest and most iconic preservation neighborhood. These homes are nearly 100 years old and require an expert touch to clean safely without damaging vintage materials.
The property featured several awnings that were heavily stained with Phaeophyta—commonly known as mustard algae. Due to the delicate canvas material and the historic value of the home, I first applied a soft wash detergent and gently agitated the surface using a soft-tip water-fed brush to lift surface buildup without damaging the fabric. I then followed up with a low-PSI soft wash rinse to blast away any stubborn algae still clinging to the material. While some light staining remained from long-term exposure, the awnings were noticeably brightened and restored, dramatically improving the home's curb appeal.
In the backyard, the stone fountain had thick green algae and organic buildup throughout the bowls and base. Because birds and local wildlife drink from the fountain, I avoided all harsh chemicals and used only eco-safe products. The fountain was power washed using low PSI to carefully remove buildup without damaging the aging concrete or disturbing the surrounding garden area.
Cleaning a historic property like this requires precision, restraint, and a deep respect for original materials. The results were clean, safe, and impressive—and the homeowner was thrilled with the outcome.
